March 2017 Check Presentation

Tuesday, March 28, 2017

On Monday, March 27, the Polk State College Foundation recognized Duke Energy Foundation for their contribution of $20,000 for the Bachelors in Education Program STEM Classroom Learning Lab. Duke Energy has been a committed partner to Polk State College by supporting the Foundation’s annual events and other initiatives.  However, this was the first time that the Duke Energy Foundation has supported a college program through their annual grants initiative.

The Duke Energy Foundation powers vibrant communities in the regions they serve by focusing on projects that support Duke Energy’s core initiatives in the following areas: K to Career, Environment, and Community Impact.

The K to Career initiative which focuses on effective education programs and initiatives that span the kindergarten-to-career spectrum, with a focus on STEM skills, childhood reading proficiency, and workforce development, and programs that foster a growing interest in the STEM fields and/or enhance childhood literacy was a perfect fit for Polk State’s Education Bachelor’s Program. Funding for the Lab will provide students with hands-on STEM experience through using technologies and tools as they prepare for a career in teaching.

Prior to the District Board meeting Duke Energy’s Jerry Miller, Government & Community Relations Manager attended a preview of the STEM Classroom Learning Lab to see first-hand what their funding has provided. Students, faculty and staff were on hand to show Jerry the STEM learning tools students in the program will use to learn teaching techniques.

The District Board, Foundation Board, College employees and the many students who will benefit from learning in the STEM Lab, thank Jerry and Duke Energy Foundation for their support that makes a genuine difference, but also for your advocacy for Polk State College.
