Golf Tournament

The Wachovia/Polk State College Foundation Golf Tournament presented by MidAmerica Administrative & Retirement Solutions, Inc. recently celebrated its 18th year. During its history the tournament has raised more than $450,000.00 for scholarships, facility enhancements, and general support of the Polk State College Baseball Team.

Held at Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, the tournament secured nineteen corporate sponsors. Over the years this tournament has become well respected as a world class affair that is run smoothly, that treats golfers with special gifts and highly anticipated prizes.

This year’s tournament held special significance to players and the Polk State College family. The Polk State College Foundation board voted to rename the annual event in memory of William N. Ryan, who served as the Polk State College Foundation Executive Director for 14 years and passed away in a car accident in the fall of 2009. Bill was the director when then-baseball coach Bing Tyus and Foundation Board member Bob Georges staged the first golf event. In addition to benefiting Polk State College’s Baseball team, the golf tournament will now also benefit the William N. Ryan Memorial First Class Endowed Scholarship.

Now serving as Polk State College’s Athletic Director, Bing Tyus is pleased that the event has been renamed. “Bill was a man of true character, and his visionary leadership and fundraising expertise helped to transform the tournament into the county’s premier golf outing to benefit a nonprofit,” he said.

At the close of the evening, tournament chairman Bob Georges paid tribute to his friend and presented Bill’s family with a vase with the newly designed event logo.
